The song, I’ve Got Two, has become a favorite with young children of all ages in classrooms across the globe. It is simple enough to participate in upon first hearing and interesting enough to continue to enjoy time and time again. It was written to build and develop confidence and initiative by encouraging children to celebrate the wonders of their bodies and the things their body parts can do.

For one and two year olds, it is a wonderful way to learn body parts (two hands, two arms, two ears, two feet, two eyes) although, as is the case with all Growing Sound songs, the main purpose is to help children develop socially and emotionally. I’ve Got Two builds confidence, initiative and a sense of personal value. This is my body and I can use it to help other people and observe and explore the world around me.

All preschool children (and school age children as well) love the movements – clapping hands, muscle grunt arms, “wooah, wooah” ears, stomping feet, and “blink, blink” eyes. The one and two year olds crack up when I play high notes on the keyboard as I blink my eyes. Waiting for the right time to add the motions into the song builds patience, a sense of rhythm and self regulation. Of course, the children aren’t thinking about that at all- it’s just a fun song to sing. And that’s the goal with all Growing Sound materials – to offer songs, books and activities that are equally fun and developmental.

With the older children we make up new verses using other pairs on our bodies – legs, knees, cheeks, nostrils (I’ve got two – sniff, sniff – holes in my nose). Over and over again, as we sing and play with the lyrics, the message that I’m a beautiful, whole, capable human being is being reinforced and mapped in our hearts and minds.

Special thanks to the Mason Early Childhood Center, Mason Ohio, and kindergarteners and teachers there who helped me write this songs.
