What is the greatest thing we can give our children? My mind, like the minds of parents everywhere, starts to race to find the answer to that question. Is it love, respect, self-esteem, peace, plenty, safety, happiness? I once read that the greatest thing we can give our children is courage. I like that. If my child has the courage to try, good things are sure to come in time. I like the root of courage – cuer – Latin for heart. Filling a child with “heart” is certainly a wonderful gift.

Another word for it would be confidence. When a child believes that he or she is able to make choices that mean something, that they are acting on the world and not just being acted upon, when they can keep on trying until it finally works out, when they know something good is happening because they are made of good stuff, living in a world made of good stuff, life becomes an open door to endless possibilities. That’s exactly what we’re singing about on I Can Do It – Songs of Confidence. Notice how many of the songs are stated in the first person present – I Can Do It, I’m Gonna Find a Way, I Can Write Any Song I Want, I Am a Rubber Band. When we state the positive and continue to work with that statement in mind, wonderful things happen. Over time, confidence becomes the foundation of a successful life. The songs from I Can Do It were written to build confidence in preschool children while providing entertainment and reinforcing positive messages.

Of course there will be bumps in the road. We sing about those too. Mistakes and failures become reasons to try again rather than reasons to give up. “Something beautiful is about to happen … I feel it in my heart. I know it’s so …” Like the caterpillar who changes into a butterfly and the bumblebee who flies even though his wings are very, very small, our children, full of confidence, can cultivate a sense of courage in each and every situation life brings their way. “…I can see all life brings. My light shines through everything…” Confidence, courage, heart; no matter what you call it, it’s one of the greatest gifts we can give.
